Escaping Home Fires

A person is crawling on the floor toward an open exit door, with smoke above.

Plan your escape before the emergency so everyone in your home knows what to do.

  • Know 2 ways out of every room.
  • Practice your escape at least twice a year with everyone in your home.
  • Sleep with your phone nearby so you can grab it quickly as you leave.
  • Have a meeting place outside of your home where you can call 9-1-1 and have firefighters see you when they arrive.

Home escape planning for kids can also be found on our KIDS ZONE page.

Close Before You Doze

Closing your bedroom door before going to sleep can dramatically increase your chances of survival during a fire.

The door will provide protection from smoke and heat giving you time to hear the alarm and implement your Escape Plan before being overcome by smoke.
